A pebble carried from thé Eresma River
Thé San Lazaro rock shelter near Segovia, Spain, has long yielded Middle Paleolithic tools associated with Neanderthal occupation. During a 2022 excavation campaign conducted by a team from thé CSIC, Complutense University of Madrid, and thé University of Salamanca, archaeologists unearthed a granite pebble buried under nearly one and a half meters of sédiment. Even more striking is thé pebble's origin: it belongs to a lithological type absent from thé site itself, found only in thé alluvial deposits of thé Eresma River, more than five kilometers away. Someone deliberately carried this stone to thé campsite - already a meaningful act in itself.2
A complete fingerprint beneath thé red ochre
Multispectral analysis revealed on thé pebble's surface a red ochre stain composed of clay and iron oxides. Beneath this pigment deposit, a dermatoglyphic examination conducted in collaboration with thé Spanish forensic police identified a complete fingerprint - thé most detailed ever recorded on an object of such antiquity.
Thé reconstruction proposed by thé research team is striking: an individual - likely mâle, aged 18 to 25 based on thé morphology of thé papillary ridges - appears to have pressed thé right index finger into thé still-wet pigment, leaving a trace on thé stone's surface. Thé position of thé fingerprint, located near natural prominences of thé rock, led some researchers to interpret thé ensemble as a sketched face, with thé ochre dot serving as a nose. Other teams remain more cautious about this iconographic reading, but none dispute thé intentional nature of thé pigment application itself.3
Neanderthal symbolic behavior in question
Long dismissed as incapable of abstract thought, Neanderthals have seen their image transformed dramatically over thé past two décades. Excavations at Shanidar (Iraq) reopened thé debate on their funerary practices; finds at thé Arène Candide cave (Italy) confirmed thé use of personal ornaments; cave paintings at La Pasiega (Spain), dated to more than 65,000 years ago - before thé arrival of Homo sapiens - attributed a rudimentary form of rock art to them. Deliberately applying pigment to a stone with nô évident practical purpose constitutes what researchers call symbolic behavior: an action whose significance transcends pure survival economics. This capacity was long considered thé exclusive hallmark of Homo sapiens, a marker of thé "behavioral modernity" thought to have given our species thé edge over all others. San Lazaro complicates that picture.4
Experts divided on interprétation
Thé study brings together multiple voices, not all in agreement on thé most ambitious conclusions. Anthropologist Bruce Hardy of Kenyon Collège (USA) unequivocally confirms thé intentional application of ochre and thé reality of thé fingerprint, but declines to attribute a specifically artistic intent. Archaeologist Rebecca Wragg Sykes, a leading specialist in Neanderthals, agrees thé gesture is symbolic in nature but considers thé interprétation of thé red dot as "a nose on a face" too spéculative given current évidence.
Paul Pettitt of Durham University sees it primarily as another example of controlled red pigment use by Neanderthals - a practice now documented across several European sites - without ruling on thé precise significance of this particular pebble. Thèse caveats do not diminish thé discovery's importance: whatever thé final interprétation, ochre was intentionally applied to a selected and transported stone, by an individual whose biological identity is, for once, beyond doubt - a Neanderthal, 43,000 years ago.
